Giant brown bats look like ordinary brown bats, only with 8' wingspans. They can focus their ultrasonic sonar on one opponent per round. That opponent must save vs. paralysis or be so distracted as to lose initiative for the next 1-6 rounds. Further, 1 in 4 giant bats are rabid. Anyone suffering a bite attack from a rabid giant bat must make a saving throw vs. poison or contract rabies. A victim who fails his save dies in 1-6 days. Even if a victim makes the save, he suffers 1-4 effects from the following table for the same period of time:
| Die roll (d12) | Effect |
Fever
Headache
Lethargy
Insomnia
Anxiety
Confusion
Partial paralysis
Excitation
Hallucinations
Agitation
Hypersalivation
Difficulty swallowing
The symptoms are mild if the saving throw is made, resulting in the victim unable to win initiative during the duration. The symptoms are increasingly severe if the saving throw is missed, resulting in inability to engage in combat or cast spells after 3-18 hours.
